This multi-stemmed shrub or small tree can reach up to 15 metres, often featuring wine-red branches armed with slender spines up to 70mm long. Its leathery, pale blue-green leaves are elliptic to obovate with toothed margins. It produces small, sweetly scented, cream-coloured flowers, followed by globose, pinkish-red fruit capsules containing reddish-brown seeds partially covered by a white or pinkish aril.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in full sun and well-draining sandy or rocky soils, this resilient species is excellent for natural fencing, hedging, or restoration in drier areas. Its drought tolerance makes it suitable for xeriscaping in a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape.
Growing notes
A moderate grower, this plant is highly drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal watering, allowing the soil to dry completely between sessions. It benefits from occasional pruning during its dormant season to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Handle with care due to its sharp thorns.
