About
This spiny shrub or small multi-stemmed tree typically reaches 1-3 metres in height, armed with strong, straight thorns up to 8 cm long. It features small, elliptic to obovate leaves that are softly hairy and have shallowly crenate margins. White or cream flowers, about 1 cm in diameter, develop in axillary clusters, followed by distinctive orange-pink, three-lobed fruits.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for dry, sunny locations in a Kilifi-coast garden, it thrives in well-drained loamy soils and is excellent for creating impenetrable security hedges or for use in indigenous restoration projects, particularly on termite mounds.
Growing notes
This hardy species requires regular watering until established, after which it tolerates drier conditions, preferring the soil to partially dry out between waterings. Pruning during its dormancy period can help maintain its shape and promote healthy growth.
