About
This variable shrub, sometimes growing into a small tree, is armed with sharp, straight thorns up to 100mm long. It features green, hairless leaves often clustered on short branchlets, and produces profuse clusters of small whitish flowers in spring that emit a strong, unpleasant, fetid scent. The fruit develops into 3-lolobed, greenish-yellow to greyish-brown capsules, which become wrinkled when dry.

Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this hardy species thrives in full sun and sandy soil, including disturbed sites. It serves as an excellent, fast-growing security hedge, barrier, or specimen plant, and can be used in restoration projects.
Growing notes
It exhibits a moderate to fast growth rate and is drought-resistant once established, requiring moderate watering as the substrate dries. This hardy plant is tolerant of coastal conditions and makes a robust, low-maintenance choice. Caution should be exercised as the sap may be slightly toxic and the wood can cause skin irritation.
