About
Grewia tenax is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub or small tree, typically growing from 0.5 to 6 metres tall, often appearing straggling. It has small, papery leaves, usually rounded with toothed margins, measuring 1.5-4 cm. The solitary white flowers are followed by edible red or orange-red lobed fruits, 3-6 mm across when ripe.
Where it works in Kilifi
This drought-resistant shrub is ideal for dry, rocky, or sandy areas, including along watercourses. It can be used for live fencing, erosion control due to its strong root system, and in land restoration projects.
Growing notes
Grewia tenax exhibits a fast growth rate, potentially reaching 1.5 metres in height within 8 months. It is highly drought tolerant once established, but young plants require protection from browsing animals.
