About
This multi-stemmed shrub or small tree can grow up to 9 metres tall. It is characterised by plum-coloured young branches, ovate-elliptic leaves typically 4 cm long, and golden-yellow flowers measuring 1-1.5 cm in diameter. The plant produces small, yellowish, spherical fruits, often deeply two-lobed, about 4 mm across. It is native to seasonally dry tropical biomes in East Africa, including coastal areas.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to Southeast Kenya, this species is well-suited for Kilifi coast gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Ideal for ecological restoration in riverine fringes, open woodlands, or as part of coastal bushland landscapes.
Growing notes
Generally easy to care for, this plant requires consistent moisture but exhibits moderate drought tolerance once established. Water every 1-2 weeks, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. It adapts to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils.
