About
Grewia micrantha is a deciduous shrub or small tree, typically reaching up to 8 metres in height, with drooping branches often marked by pale lenticels. Its elliptic to ovate-oblong leaves are 3-9 cm long, 3-veined from the base, and display dense white hairs on the underside with brown tufts on the veins. It produces yellow flowers, approximately 2 cm in diameter, that fade to dull orange-red, followed by spherical, yellowish, pubescent fruits, usually deeply two-lobed.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, making it suitable for Kilifi-coast gardens. It can serve as an attractive specimen plant or for ecological restoration in open deciduous woodland settings, as it is native to regions including Kenya and grows in seasonally dry tropical biomes.
Growing notes
Grewia micrantha is relatively easy to care for and exhibits moderate drought tolerance once established, requiring watering every 1-2 weeks. Seeds benefit from scarification, such as soaking in warm water, to promote quick germination and early growth.
