About
Grewia glandulosa is a deciduous shrub or small tree, growing up to 7.5 metres tall. It features ovate to ovate-oblong leaves, 4.5–12.5 cm long, with finely crenate-serrate, glandular margins. The flowers are pinkish or purple, with circular petals up to 10 mm in diameter, followed by 4-lobed, densely rusty hairy fruits up to 2.8 cm across.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, this species thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, particularly on coral rag. It works well as a specimen plant or for restoration in coastal thickets.
Growing notes
Germination and early growth from seed are generally quick. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant, though it benefits from consistent moisture during the growing season; mulching can help retain soil moisture. No specific cautions are known.
