About
Grewia densa is a scrambling shrub or small tree, sometimes scandent, that can reach up to 9 metres in height. It features obovate-elliptic to elliptic leaves, 1.1–7 cm long, with serrate to crenate margins and a nearly glabrous surface. Its small yellow flowers appear in 1-3 flowered cymes, which are followed by reddish to golden-yellow fruits, typically 2-lobed and sparsely hairy.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to Southeast Kenya, including the Kilifi District, this species thrives in seasonally dry tropical biomes at elevations from 0–450 metres. It is suitable for restoration projects in its natural habitat and can be planted in a garden receiving full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil.
Growing notes
Generally, Grewia species are easy to care for and exhibit moderate drought tolerance once established, though they benefit from regular watering without being waterlogged. They prefer warmer temperatures and humidity, typical of their tropical origin.
