About
Grewia capitellata is a scrambling shrub or small tree, reaching up to 8 metres tall. It is characterised by ovate to obovate leaves, 2.8–10 cm long, with serrated margins that are often hairy underneath. The plant produces white or greenish flowers in cymes, which are followed by edible, 1-4-lobed fruits, typically 10–13 mm wide.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to SE Kenya and E Tanzania, this species thrives in seasonally dry tropical biomes. It is well-suited for a Kilifi-coast garden in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, making it suitable for specimen planting, hedges, or restoration projects.
Growing notes
This Grewia species generally requires regular watering until established, after which it exhibits moderate drought tolerance. It is typically propagated by seed or stem cuttings.
