About

This small to medium-sized tree is recognised by its large, rough, heart-shaped leaves and small, pale yellow flowers. These are followed by distinctive four-lobed, orange-red fruits which are edible and enjoyed by local wildlife.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal for full sun to partial shade in well-draining coastal soils, this tree works well as an attractive specimen or for light shade. Its native status makes it excellent for coastal restoration projects, best planted with adequate space for its spreading canopy.

Growing notes

It exhibits a moderate growth rate and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant, requiring minimal supplemental watering. This hardy species thrives in the warm, humid conditions of the Kenya coast with little fuss.
