About
Grewia balensis is a shrub or small tree, growing up to 4.5 metres tall, with young branches densely covered in coarse stellate hairs, sometimes appearing reddish-brown. Its leaves are ovate to oblong, 1.5–7 cm long, with serrated to crenate-serrate margins, sparsely hairy above and densely whitish stellate-pubescent beneath. The plant produces clusters of yellow flowers, and its fruit is typically two-lobed, covered with long brown hairs.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to coastal Southeast Kenya, thriving in seasonally dry tropical biomes and sandy bushland at altitudes of 0–10 metres, this species is well-suited for Kilifi gardens and restoration projects. It can serve as a small specimen tree or a substantial shrub in sunny, well-drained locations.
Growing notes
Once established, Grewia balensis demonstrates moderate drought tolerance, requiring watering every 1-2 weeks. It is adapted to high temperatures and dry conditions, but it is important to protect the plant from frost, as temperatures below 10°C can cause damage.
