About
Gossypium barbadense is a tropical, frost-sensitive perennial shrub or small tree that typically grows up to 3 metres tall. It features large, lobed, deep green leaves and showy yellow flowers, which may later turn pink with a reddish basal spot. The plant produces distinctive capsules that split open to reveal black seeds surrounded by long, silky white fibres, highly prized for their exceptional softness and strength in high-quality textiles. In Kenya, the lint has been traditionally used as a dressing on sores.
Where it works in Kilifi
This sun-loving plant thrives in warm Kilifi coastal gardens, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily and shelter from strong winds. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, though it can tolerate mildly alkaline and saline conditions. It can be planted as a specimen or in mixed plantings, requiring adequate space to spread, such as 1.5-2.5 metres apart.
