About
This terrestrial herb is a small geophyte, growing from an underground rhizome or tuber. Native to evergreen forests in Tanzania and Mozambique, it is found at altitudes of 40-100 metres. It typically produces a solitary leaf, which is 1-4-pinnately lobed with elliptic to linear ultimate lobes, and erect inflorescences bearing unisexual flowers. The plant yields fleshy berries that can be red, orange, yellow, or whitish, each containing one to two seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This herb thrives in dappled to full shade, making it ideal for understory planting in a coastal forest garden or as a container specimen. It prefers moist, well-drained soils, reflecting its natural habitat in evergreen forests.
Growing notes
As a seasonally dormant plant, it requires reduced watering during its resting period, with increased frequency at the onset of rains.
