About
This herbaceous climbing perennial grows from a fleshy tuber, reaching up to 4 metres with the aid of tendrils found at the tips of its lance-shaped leaves. Its strikingly showy flowers feature six widely separated, reflexed tepals, typically vibrant red to orange with yellow bases and often wavy margins. These are followed by fleshy capsules containing red seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This striking climber thrives in full sun to partial shade, ideally protected from intense midday sun. Plant in well-drained, organically rich soil, providing a trellis or support for its tendrils to climb. Suitable as a specimen plant or for adding vertical interest to a Kilifi-coast garden, it can also be grown in large containers.
Growing notes
Grows at a medium to fast rate, reaching up to 3 metres (10 feet) with support. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season, but ensure good drainage to prevent tuber rot. All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested, particularly the tubers, and contact with sap can cause skin irritation; always handle with gloves.
