A medium-sized tree, Gigasiphon macrosiphon typically grows 6-20m tall in moist coastal forests of Kenya and Tanzania. It features huge, magnolia-like white flowers, often with a yellow splash on one petal, which can span up to 20 cm across. The tree produces flattened, indehiscent pods up to 30 cm long, containing suborbicular, purplish-brown seeds that resemble sea beans and are adapted for water dispersal.

This ornamental tree thrives in full sun and moist coastal forest conditions, though it can tolerate drier spots once established. Ideal as a specimen tree, for shade, or as a windbreak in larger gardens and restoration projects, allowing ample space of 9-12 metres for its spread.

This slow-growing tree prefers moist conditions during its young phase, with full shade critical for vulnerable young leaves. Once established, it exhibits drought tolerance and can withstand light frost. Propagation is best achieved by scarifying its hard seeds before sowing.
