Gardenia transvenulosa is an evergreen shrub or small tree, typically growing 2–5 metres tall, with resinous bark that exudes a yellowish resin. Its elliptic to obovate leaves, 5–15 cm long, exhibit a distinctive transverse venation pattern. It produces white to cream-coloured, waxy, tubular flowers, 2–4 cm long, either solitary or in small clusters, primarily blooming from November to March.
Where it works in Kilifi
This indigenous coastal species thrives in wet tropical forests and coastal woodlands, tolerating partial shade and periodic moisture stress. In a Kilifi-coast garden, it is best placed in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, or under the dappled shade of larger trees. It requires organically rich, well-drained, acidic soil and can serve as an attractive specimen plant, a component in a mixed border, or for restoration in suitable understory conditions.
Growing notes
Gardenia species are generally slow-growing and require consistently moist, but not waterlogged, soil. Regular watering during dry periods is essential, and mulching can help maintain soil moisture. It prefers high humidity and is sensitive to root disturbance, so choose its location carefully.
