About
Galiniera saxifraga is an evergreen shrub or small tree, typically reaching heights of 1.8–14 meters and forming a thin, rounded crown. It features large, opposite, elliptic to oblong-elliptic leaves, which are shiny on the upper surface and often hairy along the veins beneath. Small, fragrant, waxy-white flowers, sometimes tinged pink or red, are produced in compact clusters, followed by bunches of green berries that ripen to red or purple-brown, measuring 5–10 mm in diameter.
Where it works in Kilifi
This Afromontane species primarily thrives in humid upper montane evergreen forests and mountain woodlands at elevations of 1,500–3,000 meters. While its natural habitat is in cooler, moist highlands, it has been recorded in Kenyan coastal forests at very low elevations. In a Kilifi garden, it would likely require a specific microclimate offering consistent shade, high humidity, and consistently moist, well-drained soil, possibly suitable for a rare specimen or specialised restoration planting.

Galiniera saxifraga prefers semi-humid to humid conditions and fertile, well-drained soils, often growing as an understory component. It maintains evergreen foliage throughout the year.
