About
This tall, evergreen tree typically reaches 15-30 metres in height with a straight, cylindrical trunk. It features glossy dark green, leathery, opposite leaves and creamy-yellow, fragrant flowers. The tree produces grey-brown, fusiform fruit containing numerous silky-haired, wind-dispersed seeds; its bark exudes a sticky milky latex when cut, historically used as birdlime.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suited for larger gardens or restoration sites on the Kilifi coast, this tree thrives in moist, well-drained, loamy soils, offering dense shade once mature. It is shade-tolerant when young, allowing establishment under existing tree cover, and its root system helps prevent soil erosion.
Growing notes
Funtumia africana exhibits a fast growth rate and, once established, prefers consistently moist soil conditions. Caution is advised as its milky latex can be an irritant to skin and eyes.
