About
This robust herbaceous perennial is a vigorous climber, producing tough, bamboo-like stems up to 10 metres long from a rhizomatous rootstock. Its linear-lanceolate leaves, 10-22 cm long, feature an apex modified into a coiled tendril, enabling the plant to climb effectively. It bears creamy-white flowers in branched terminal heads, which develop into red berries.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in full sun to light shade, this climber is ideal for coastal gardens, providing excellent coverage for fences, pergolas, or as a specimen plant in a mixed border. It prefers well-drained soil and is suitable for restoration plantings in coastal and riverine forest fringes.
Growing notes
A tough and perennial species, it can be propagated from seeds or semi-hardwood cuttings. Ensure consistent watering during establishment, after which it becomes more resilient. Be aware that the fruit pulp is highly irritant to the skin.
