About
This evergreen tree forms a dense, rounded crown atop a straight trunk, reaching 5-20 metres in height. Its most striking feature is its large, glossy dark green, fern-like leaves, composed of numerous elongated oval leaflets arranged along a winged central stalk. Small, inconspicuous white or pink-tinted flowers develop into oval drupes that mature to a purple-red or dark blue colour.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, this tree thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a range of well-draining soils, including those near the sea due to its good salt resistance. It makes an excellent specimen tree, provides dense shade, or can be used effectively for privacy screens and windbreaks.
Growing notes
A slow-growing tree, it requires average, regular watering once established but benefits from allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. It is heat-tolerant but will not withstand freezing temperatures. While generally low-maintenance, be aware that abundant seeds, dispersed by birds, may lead to some naturalisation in favourable conditions.
