Ficus sur is a fast-growing, deciduous or evergreen tree that typically reaches 5–12 metres in height, though it can grow up to 40 metres. It develops a dense, rounded crown with large, shiny, ovate leaves that often show a reddish tint when young. Its most distinctive feature is the clusters of edible, orange-red figs that emerge directly from the trunk and older branches.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is well-suited for coastal gardens, thriving in full sun to partial shade and a wide range of well-draining soil types. It serves excellently as an ornamental or shade tree in large landscapes, golf courses, or parklands. Due to its potentially aggressive root system, ensure ample space and avoid planting near foundations, paving, or pipes.
Growing notes
Ficus sur is a fast-growing tree, with young plants reaching 1 metre or more in their second year. Once established, it has moderate water needs and exhibits good drought tolerance. Seedlings require consistent watering for the first two years after transplanting.
