View in catalogue →About
A medium-sized deciduous tree typically growing 10–15 metres tall with a dense, spreading crown, providing substantial shade. It often begins life as a hemi-epiphytic strangler, sending down aerial roots that can encircle and girdle host trees, though it can also grow terrestrially. Its elliptic to obovate leaves are stiff and thickly textured with prominent yellowish veins beneath, and it produces small, edible, yellowish-green figs that ripen to pink or purple.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal as a large specimen or shade tree in a Kilifi-coast garden, it thrives in well-draining loam soil and hot, dry conditions characteristic of coastal woodlands. Space it generously to accommodate its mature size and potential strangler habit.
Growing notes
This adaptable fig grows well with bright, indirect light and moderate watering once established, preferring the soil to almost dry out between waterings. Its sap can cause skin irritation, and the plant is toxic if ingested by pets or humans.
