About
This arboriform tree typically grows up to 20 metres tall, developing a broad, spreading crown. Its coriaceous leaves are arranged in spirals, oblong to oblanceolate, and can reach 15-50 cm in length. Figs, 2-4 cm in diameter, are subglobose and ripen to a yellow, orange, or reddish hue, appearing in clusters in leaf axils or just below the leaves.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to western Kenya, this species thrives in wet tropical biomes, often found at forest edges, riverine areas, or lakesides. It is suitable as an ornamental specimen or shade tree in Kilifi-coast gardens, requiring full sun and moist, well-drained soil.
Growing notes
A fast-growing tree, it prefers warm, humid conditions. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from deep watering when the top 2-5 cm of soil is dry, typically once a week. Avoid both overwatering and prolonged dryness.
