This evergreen or briefly deciduous tree typically grows to a medium size, though it can reach up to 30 metres with a wide-spreading crown. It often begins life as an epiphyte, later developing aerial roots and sometimes strangling host trees, but can also grow terrestrially. The tree is characterised by smooth, pale grey bark and glossy, stiff, long-oval leaves; its small, rounded figs, 8-18 mm across, ripen to a yellow-red hue.

Ideal as a striking specimen or shade tree in larger Kilifi gardens or for restoration projects. It thrives in sunny or semi-shaded positions and well-drained soil, including coastal and riverine forest conditions. Due to its potentially aggressive root system, ensure generous spacing away from permanent structures.
