This semi-deciduous tree can reach up to 30 metres in height, distinguished by its bark which is smooth and pale grey when young, later becoming rougher and yellow-green with age. It features glossy, dark green, leathery leaves (12–30 cm long) and bears spherical, green fruits that ripen to yellowish on short, spine-like spurs directly on the trunk and main branches. Sharp thorns are present on both the stem and branches, offering a unique characteristic.
Where it works in Kilifi
A robust and ornamental choice for the Kilifi coast, this fig thrives in full sun to semi-shade within large gardens, parks, or naturalised areas, making an excellent shade tree. It prefers well-drained soil, ideally loam or sandy loam with a slightly acid to neutral pH, aligning with coastal forest conditions. For hedging, space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart.
Growing notes
Ficus bubu is easily propagated from seeds or cuttings and exhibits a relatively fast growth rate, quickly establishing into a substantial tree. While requiring moderate watering during its establishment phase, it becomes drought-tolerant once mature. Prune sparingly to maintain its natural canopy shape.
