This scrambling shrub or small tree is native to coastal Kenya and southern Somalia, typically found in coastal forests and bushland at low altitudes, often on clay soils. It features reddish, flaking bark and pubescent young branches, with opposite, oblanceolate to obovate leaves that are densely reddish-brown and hairy underneath. White, pink-flushed flowers appear solitary or in clusters, often before the leaves, developing into deep red, nearly spherical fruits which are notably smaller than those of related subspecies.
