About
This succulent shrub or small tree can reach heights of up to 12 metres, characterised by its pencil-thick, green, smooth, cylindrical branches. Tiny oval leaves are present on new growth but typically drop off early. It produces inconspicuous yellowish flowers at the branch tips and contains a milky, toxic latex sap.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to tropical East Africa, this species thrives in full sun and is highly drought-tolerant, making it suitable for Kilifi's semi-arid tropical climate. It serves excellently as a dense live fence or hedge for boundary demarcation, soil conservation, or as a windbreak.
Growing notes
The Pencil Tree exhibits a fast growth rate once established and is extremely drought tolerant, requiring minimal watering once settled. It is not cold-hardy, preferring warm temperatures. All parts of the plant contain a caustic milky sap, which is highly irritating to skin and eyes, and toxic if ingested, necessitating careful handling with gloves and eye protection.
