About
This succulent subshrub or shrub, native to south-eastern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania, typically grows to 100-180 cm tall. It features quadrangular stems with prominent paired spines. The plant produces yellowish-brown to delicate orange, ovoid flowers.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi Coast gardens, this species thrives in full sun and requires well-drained, sandy or rocky soil. It is well-suited for xeriscaping, rock gardens, or as a distinctive specimen plant.
Growing notes
This drought-tolerant succulent prefers infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry completely between sessions; reduce watering in cooler, dormant periods. It is not frost-tolerant and requires protection from temperatures below 10°C. Handle with care as its milky sap is poisonous and can irritate skin and eyes.
