About
This succulent, evergreen shrub or tree can reach impressive heights of 7 to 20 metres, often developing a distinct trunk up to 50 cm in diameter on mature specimens. Its trunk is uniquely characterised by four to six vertical rows of spines. Native to East tropical Africa, including Kenya and Tanzania, it thrives in sandy soils within deciduous woodlands, on cliffs, and along coastal sand-dunes at elevations ranging from 2 to 700 metres. The plant's latex is poisonous and has historically been incorporated into arrow poison by the Giriama people.
