About
This succulent evergreen shrub or tree can grow up to 20 metres tall, developing a clear trunk up to 50cm in diameter in larger specimens. Its trunk is distinctive, marked by 4-6 vertical rows of spines. The plant produces a milky, poisonous latex, traditionally used in arrow poison and as fish poison.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, this species thrives in sandy, well-drained soils, including on cliffs and sand-dunes. It is well-suited as a large specimen tree or for creating robust hedges and living fences.
Growing notes
Euphorbia nyikae prefers full sun and is drought tolerant once established, requiring minimal watering. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Handle with caution, as its milky sap is poisonous and can cause skin irritation.
