About

This succulent shrub is characterised by its numerous upright, pencil-like green stems, which are typically cylindrical and smooth. Growing to several metres tall, it forms a dense, architectural presence, with its tiny leaves quickly shedding to leave the photosynthetic stems exposed.

Where it works in Kilifi

Thriving in full sun and well-drained sandy soils, this plant makes an excellent architectural specimen or an effective, informal drought-tolerant hedge. Allow ample space for its mature height and spread, integrating it into rockeries or dry gardens where its unique form can be appreciated.

Growing notes

This species exhibits a moderate growth rate and is extremely drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal watering. Handle with care as all parts contain an irritating milky sap; wear gloves and avoid contact with eyes.
