About
Euphorbia kalisana is a perennial medusoid succulent subshrub, forming spiny mounds 1-2 metres across with sprawling cylindrical branches from a thick central stem. Its stems exhibit dark and light green longitudinal stripes, bearing prominent single, pale grey spines up to 7 cm long. This species produces small yellow cyathia (flowers) and is native to dry regions of Ethiopia and northern Kenya, typically found in sandy gravelly soil, rocky slopes, and bushland.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for xeriscaping or rock gardens in Kilifi, this plant thrives in full sun to moderate shade, performing best with bright, indirect light or morning sun to avoid scorching. It requires mineral-based, well-draining soil and can serve as a striking specimen or groundcover.
Growing notes
A slow-growing and long-lived plant, Euphorbia kalisana is considered tricky to cultivate. It requires sparse watering during dry seasons and should be kept dry in winter, as overwatering when not in active growth can be fatal. All parts of the plant contain a milky sap that can cause skin irritation, so handle with gloves.
