About
This perennial shrub typically grows to 30-50 cm tall, featuring narrow, spiny leaves and small, yellow-green flowers. It produces tiny black seeds with a white coating. Found in coastal grasslands and bushlands of Kenya, often in dry, rocky areas. Like other members of the genus, it contains a milky, irritating, and toxic sap.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for coastal Kilifi gardens and landscapes, this shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade. It requires well-drained soil and can be used as an ornamental specimen or for restoration plantings in grassland and bushland environments. Allow adequate space for its moderate mature size.
Growing notes
A low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plant once established. Propagation is successful from seeds or stem cuttings; cuttings should be allowed to dry for several days before planting in a well-drained medium. Caution is advised when handling due to its milky, irritating sap.
