About
This succulent shrub is native to Kenya, growing primarily in dry shrubland biomes and on rock outcrops. It is distinguished by its indistinctly variegated branches, joined spine shields, red flowers (cyathia), reddish-yellow nectar glands, and red-flushed fruit. It exhibits a smaller and more compact growth form than the main species.
Where it works in Kilifi
This ornamental succulent thrives in full sun to light shade in a Kilifi-coast garden, ideally in very airy, well-draining soil composed primarily of non-organic materials. Its compact growth makes it suitable as a specimen plant or in rockeries.
Growing notes
This subspecies is easy to grow and tolerates neglect, exhibiting relatively rapid seasonal growth. Water regularly during the active growing season, ensuring no standing water around the roots, and keep almost completely dry in winter. It is drought tolerant once established, but its latex sap is poisonous and should be handled with caution.
