About
Euphorbia grandicornis is a multi-stemmed succulent shrub, typically reaching 1.5 to 3.5 metres in height and width. Its erect, green, 3- to 4-winged branches have a distinctive zigzag pattern and are armed with prominent pairs of grey or brownish spines up to 7.5 cm long, resembling cow's horns. Tiny, yellow to golden flowers appear in groups along the branch tips during late spring to early summer, followed by reddish or purple fruits.
Where it works in Kilifi
This plant thrives in full sun, tolerating partial shade, and requires very well-drained soil. It serves as an excellent ornamental specimen, an accent plant, or can be planted in multiples to create an impenetrable hedge. Due to its mature size, allow ample space in a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape.
Growing notes
It is a moderately fast-growing species that, once established, is drought-tolerant, but benefits from moderate summer watering, allowing the soil to dry between applications. Keep largely dry during winter months. All Euphorbias contain a white, irritating sap, so handle with care, especially when pruning.
