About
This succulent tree, native to dry regions of East Africa, can reach heights of up to 15 metres, forming a distinctive, broadly rounded crown. Its green-grey, erect branches have 3-5 spiny ribs or wings with narrow 'waists', functioning as leaves in mature plants. Small, fleshy green-yellow flowers appear in clusters, followed by pea-sized, green-red capsules.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in full sun and requires well-draining, sandy, clay, or coral soil. It is excellent as an ornamental specimen, a large shade tree, or planted to form a live fence, requiring ample space due to its mature size.
Growing notes
A fast-growing plant, the Candelabra tree is highly drought-tolerant and needs minimal watering once established, with soil drying completely between waterings. It is frost tender and requires warm, frost-free conditions. All parts of the plant produce a toxic milky latex that can cause skin irritation and blindness if it contacts the eyes.
