About

This striking succulent forms a large tree-like plant with a distinctive, multi-branched candelabra shape. Its robust, green, segmented stems are lined with thorns and produce a caustic milky white latex, reaching impressive heights in maturity.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal as a dramatic specimen plant or natural barrier, it thrives in full sun and very well-drained, sandy or rocky soils typical of the Kilifi coast. Ensure ample space for its considerable size and place away from high-traffic areas due to its thorny nature and irritant sap.

Growing notes

It exhibits moderate to fast growth and is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, requiring very little supplemental water. Always handle with caution, as the milky white sap is toxic and can cause severe skin and eye irritation.
