About
This robust terrestrial orchid features fleshy, lance-shaped leaves that emerge from underground pseudobulbs. It produces striking bright yellow flowers, often with reddish markings on the lip, arranged on tall, unbranched stalks reaching up to 1.8 metres. Found in a variety of grasslands, including coastal areas, it is well-adapted to both sandy and clay soils.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suitable for Kilifi-coast gardens, this orchid thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, including sandy or brackish coastal types. It can be grown as a vibrant specimen in garden beds or containers, though protection from mole rats is advisable if planted directly in the ground.
Growing notes
Generally easy to grow, ensure the substrate is kept moist during active growth but never waterlogged; reduce watering significantly during its dormant period. Coastal forms prefer warmer conditions. Plants typically mature to flowering size within two to three years from seed.
