About
This evergreen shrub or small bushy tree typically grows 2-7 metres tall, with a dense, spreading crown, but can reach up to 18 metres in favourable conditions. It features dark green, leathery leaves that are obovate and often covered with velvety hairs underneath, with new growth appearing pale and gold-tinged. Small, bell-shaped, greenish-white to cream flowers are followed by edible, round, red to black berries.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this species thrives in full sun to semi-shade and well-drained, sandy to loamy soils, making it suitable as a specimen tree, a screening plant, or for providing shade. It is well-suited for windy coastal conditions.
Growing notes
This adaptable tree is relatively slow-growing and drought-tolerant once established, but requires moderate to good watering during its initial years to promote establishment. Young plants should be protected from frost.
