About
This evergreen shrub or small tree typically grows 3-9 metres tall, often branching from the base. It features distinctive leathery, grey-green leaves with wavy margins, and produces small, sweet-scented creamy-white flowers. These are followed by small, round purplish-black fruits, which are edible though not particularly palatable, and are used to make a purple dye.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in full sun and well-drained, loamy soils, this species is suitable for a Kilifi-coast garden. It can serve as a specimen plant, providing shade, or be integrated into restoration projects, especially on rocky or calcareous ground. Allow ample space as it can produce root suckers.
Growing notes
A relatively fast grower, Magic Guarri is hardy and drought-tolerant once established, requiring infrequent watering every 2-3 weeks. Be aware of its tendency to produce root suckers, which can lead to invasiveness in disturbed areas if not managed.
