About
Erythrococca kirkii is a much-branched evergreen shrub, often straggling or erect, and sometimes adopting a climbing habit, growing 1 to 4.5 metres tall. It features small, leathery, dark green leaves, typically 5–15 cm long, which are ovate to elliptic-lanceolate with coarsely toothed margins. The plant produces small, white, star-shaped flowers, followed by three-lobed capsule fruits that mature to greenish, reddish, or purplish, containing yellow, orange, or red seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in coastal bushland and forest edges, making it ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens. It tolerates sunny positions and dry, rocky soils, suitable for use as an ornamental specimen, a hedge, or in restoration plantings.
Growing notes
Erythrococca kirkii can be propagated from seeds or cuttings. Seeds require a well-draining soil mix, kept warm and humid for germination. Cuttings should be taken from healthy plants, rooted in moist, well-draining soil, and watered regularly in a warm, humid environment. Once established, it is adaptable to dry conditions.
