This deciduous tree typically reaches 9–24 metres tall, featuring a stiffly branched, open, rounded crown. Its stems are armed with thorny branches and black prickles, while the bark is smooth and grey to brown. Striking scarlet flowers emerge on bare branches before the leaves, attracting pollinators. All parts, especially the seeds, contain toxic alkaloids.

As a large canopy or emergent tree, Erythrina sacleuxii is an excellent choice for a Kilifi-coast garden, suitable as a specimen tree or for providing substantial shade in open areas. It thrives in sandy or coral-derived soils typical of coastal woodlands and bushlands.
