About
A large evergreen or semi-deciduous tree, Ekebergia capensis can reach heights of 15 to 30 metres with a rough, grey to black bark that may have buttress roots at its base. It features glossy green, pinnate leaves, often tinged with pink edges, and produces small, sweetly scented white or pinkish-white flowers in loose sprays. The tree bears round, fleshy fruits that ripen from green to a bright red or orange, providing food for birds and mammals, and is valued for its timber and traditional medicinal uses.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy to loam soils, making it suitable for Kilifi's coastal conditions. It functions well as a large ornamental specimen or shade tree in spacious gardens and public areas, and can also be used for street planting, soil conservation, or as a windbreak.
Growing notes
Ekebergia capensis is a fairly fast-growing tree, especially when provided with ample water, though it tolerates light drought once established. Regular watering is beneficial, allowing the soil to dry out between applications. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (6.0-8.0) and can be propagated from seeds or, more rapidly, from hardwood cuttings.
