About
This deciduous tree can reach 5–15 metres, occasionally up to 20 metres, often branching from the base with a crooked trunk and weak drooping branches. Its bark is rough, greyish-brown, and can display a distinct puzzle-like pattern. Leaves are elliptic to ovate, dark green and glossy with serrated margins, while small, fragrant white flowers develop into round, orange to red edible fruits.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full to partial sun and prefers well-drained sandy to loamy soils, making it suitable for Kilifi coast gardens. It is an excellent choice as an ornamental specimen, for shade, or in restoration efforts.
Growing notes
A fast-growing tree that is drought-tolerant once established, requiring moderate watering every 2-3 weeks in drier conditions. It is hardy in tropical to subtropical climates (USDA Zones 10-12). Note that roots and leaves are reported to be poisonous to humans.
