About
This large forest tree can reach 30-60 metres in height, featuring horizontally spreading branches and a straight bole. Its leaves are typically elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, 2-4 inches long, with an entire or slightly undulate margin. The species is dioecious, requiring both male and female trees for fruit and seed production.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suitable for larger gardens or restoration projects in Kilifi, this species thrives in lowland, submontane, and montane forest conditions, providing good shade. It would prefer a site with dappled to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil.
Growing notes
As a dioecious species, both male and female plants must be grown if fruit and seed are desired. The hard wood is traditionally used for making pestles, mortars, poles, and as fuel.
