About
This is a shrub or small tree, typically growing up to 6 metres tall, with pale grey branches. Its leaves are obliquely ovate to elliptic-ovate, leathery, and usually glabrous, measuring 3–8 x 1.5–4 cm with shallowly serrate to subentire margins. The subglobose fruits are 1.2–1.8 cm, smooth, and ripen to an orange or red colour.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to evergreen semi-deciduous coastal and riverine forests in Kenya, thriving at altitudes from 0 to 450 metres. It is suitable for a Kilifi-coast garden, preferring well-draining soil and locations with partial to full sun. It can serve as a specimen tree or provide light shade.
Growing notes
Drypetes generally prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil but is sensitive to overwatering once established. It thrives in warm conditions with consistent humidity.
