About

This attractive evergreen shrub features striking, broad, strap-like leaves arranged in rosettes at the end of its stems, creating a lush, tropical appearance. It produces small, fragrant, greenish-white flowers followed by decorative orange-red berries, adding seasonal interest.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal for adding a touch of the tropics to shaded or semi-shaded areas of your Kilifi garden, it thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. Plant it as an understorey specimen, in a mixed border, or for naturalistic screening beneath taller trees, allowing at least 1.5 metres for spread.

Growing notes

This shrub exhibits a moderate growth rate and, once established, is relatively low-maintenance, requiring infrequent watering except during prolonged dry periods. It is hardy in tropical climates, preferring sheltered spots, and its berries should be noted as mildly toxic if ingested.
