About
An evergreen shrub or small tree, typically growing 2-5 metres tall, with a tan-coloured trunk marked by leaf scars. It features large, glossy-green, leathery, strap-shaped leaves arranged in rosettes at branch tips. Sweetly scented, tiny yellow-green flowers emerge on tall spikes in summer, followed by attractive orange berries.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in shady areas of a Kilifi-coast garden, such as under larger trees or in wooded ravines, requiring fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil. It is an excellent specimen plant for lawns in coastal areas or a focal point in containers for shady patios, also suitable for wild gardens.
Growing notes
A relatively fast-growing plant that needs consistent watering during warmer months, but less in winter; it is drought-sensitive once established. Protect from direct sun exposure, which can scorch its leaves. It is frost sensitive and prefers warm, humid conditions.
