About

This attractive evergreen tree or large shrub is native to East Africa, often characterised by its thorny branches. It produces small, edible, tart, orange-yellow fruits that are popular for jams, juices, and fresh consumption.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal as a robust boundary hedge due to its spiny nature or as a small garden specimen tree in full sun to light shade. It tolerates a range of well-drained coastal soils and can be planted 2-3 metres apart for a dense screen.

Growing notes

This species has a moderate to fast growth rate and is notably drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal supplementary watering. It is generally hardy and thrives with little intervention, though initial support for young plants may be beneficial.
