About
Dorstenia warneckei is a perennial herb, typically growing 30-70 cm tall, with a rhizomatous or sometimes slightly tuberous base. It features stout, succulent stems and fleshy, narrowly obovate-oblong leaves with irregularly toothed margins. This species thrives in the wet tropical biome, often found in shady and moist forest environments, including among rocks.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is ideal for shady, moist garden beds or rockeries in a Kilifi-coast garden, replicating its natural forest habitat. It prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. Ensure a well-drained, organic-rich soil to prevent waterlogging.
Growing notes
Growth rate can be relatively quick with consistent watering and diluted fertiliser during the growing season, but will be very slow if kept drier. It requires consistent moisture, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and should be kept much drier during winter dormancy. Provide well-drained soil to prevent rotting, as the plant is susceptible to root rot if overwatered.
