About
Dorstenia tayloriana is a perennial herb, typically growing up to 50 cm tall, with ascending, unbranched stems that may become woody at the base. It is distinguished by its unique, disc- or funnel-shaped inflorescences, which are not true flowers but pseudanthiums containing clusters of tiny unisexual flowers. Upon maturity, its fruits are drupe-like and explosively scatter seeds, a characteristic of the genus.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in coastal forest environments, making it suitable for shaded or partly shaded locations in a Kilifi-coast garden. It prefers moist, well-drained soil, often found naturally on limestone, and can serve as an interesting underplanting or specimen due to its unusual form.
Growing notes
Dorstenia tayloriana prefers consistent moisture during the growing season, with soil allowed to dry slightly between waterings, but care must be taken to prevent waterlogging to avoid rot.
