About
Dorstenia alta is a shrub typically growing 1.5–2 metres tall with slender branches. Its stiff, obovate-elliptic to oblong leaves measure 9–16.5 cm long and 4–7 cm wide, often exhibiting undulate or irregularly toothed margins in the upper portion. The unique, boat-shaped inflorescences appear solitary in the upper leaf axils.
Where it works in Kilifi
This East African native thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade, preferring well-drained soil. Given its shrubby habit, it is suitable as a specimen plant, for mixed borders, or in an indigenous garden setting on the Kilifi coast. Good for restoration planting in suitable East African coastal habitats.
Growing notes
A warm-loving plant, Dorstenia alta requires moderate watering during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry slightly between applications, but never completely. Reduce watering significantly during cooler, dormant periods. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging. Be aware that seeds are explosively dispersed, potentially leading to self-seeding in nearby pots or garden beds.
